Diaper changing hacks for new parents

  • To help keep diaper blowouts at bay, fold the top inch of the back of the clean diaper down before you fasten it to act as a "poo dam." This prevents messy diaper leaks from traveling up your baby’s back. Tip: Some brands of diapers even have a built-in poo dam to prevent blowouts.
  • When changing a diaper, slide the clean diaper under the dirty diaper before you take it off to make a quick swap without the mess. Tip: The diaper brands with a built-in poo dam are especially handy here. Use the dam on the clean diaper as a holster for your hand so you can slide that diaper under the dirty one using one hand while you hold baby’s legs up with the other.
  • If you struggle with getting just one wipe out of the wipe package, try cutting a slit on each side of the opening of the wipe package to make it easier for the stack to release just one wipe at a time.
  • Conserve wet wipes and prevent extra mess by using the front of a soiled diaper as the first wipe when you’re dealing with a #2. You’ll do a thorough wipe from front to back with the front of the diaper, then simply remove the dirty diaper and wipe as necessary.
  • To help prevent your baby from urinating on you during a diaper change, wipe a cold wet wipe across their lower abdomen before you take the dirty diaper off to encourage them to urinate before you start the process.
  • To make applying diaper cream easier and more sanitary, use a soft silicone diaper cream applicator or spatula to apply diaper cream. No hand washing required!
