A good stand mixer can become a staple in your kitchen and last for years or even decades. Not only do they save time on otherwise tedious meal prep tasks, they often create better results when cooking or baking and add versatility to your repertoire. But like any household appliance, properly calibrating and maintaining your stand mixer is key to getting the most out of this kitchen powerhouse. If your stand mixer wobbles or doesn’t reach all of the ingredients at the bottom of the bowl to properly incorporate them into the mix, you have a problem. Here’s how to quickly and easily fix a stand mixer using of all things, a dime!

Watch the video above to learn how to fix a stand mixer for under $1.

How to fix a stand mixer

  • Attach the paddle.
  • Drop a dime into the bottom of your stand mixer’s empty mixing bowl.
  • These stand mixers are designed to have a 1/16” space of clearance from beater to bowl at the bottom. This ensures you can incorporate all of the ingredients during the mixing process without scraping the bottom of the bowl. A dime is exactly 1/16” in thickness, which makes it perfect for properly calibrating your mixer.
  • Turn the beater on low. If the dime does not move, the beater is too high. If the dime moves around continuously, the beater is too low. If the dime moves around the bowl at about 1/4” to 1/2” per pass of the beater, the clearance is perfect.
  • To lower or raise your beater, use a screwdriver to turn the screw that’s located at the hinge where the body and the head of the mixer connect. Do a 1/4 turn to the right to lower, or a 1/4 turn to the left to raise it.
  • Turn the screw in 1/4 increments until the dime moves around the bowl at about 1/4” to 1/2” per pass of the beater.
