Philly cheesesteak recipe
Philly cheesesteaks require few ingredients, and you might already have much of what you need at home.
First, gather your ingredients. You'll need:
- Large pan.
- Onion.
- Bell pepper.
- Steak or shaved beef.
- Mushrooms (optional).
- Provolone cheese.
- Bread.
- Salt, pepper and garlic powder.
To make the meat and vegetable mix for a Philly cheesesteak:
- Slice the onion and pepper.
- Thinly slice the steak. You can save some time with store-bought shaved beef.
- Sauté the vegetables in a large pan. Lightly salting them will help them sweat down.
- As they cook down, add sliced mushrooms to the mix.
- Once the veggies are sauteed, slide them to one side of the pan.
- Add some oil to the pan.
- Add the beef to the unoccupied side of the pan. Spread it out to get a nice sear.
- Season the beef with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
- Mix the beef and vegetables together and let it cook through.
- It's ready to serve once the meat is cooked.
If you prefer non-beef options, consider substituting beef with chicken or a medley of mushrooms for a vegetarian alternative.
Of course, a must-have for a Philly cheesesteak is cheese! So, you can either top the mix with slices of provolone cheese or put the cheese in the individual sandwiches.
For Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, place the bread on a baking sheet or use aluminum foil to make individual pans for the bread (this also makes for an easier cleanup!). Assemble your sandwich with cheese, meat and vegetables. Then, place it in the oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese and get the bread nice and toasty.
When it comes to those leftovers, consider pairing them with:
- A salad.
- Rice, teriyaki sauce, sriracha and sesame seeds.
- A baked potato.
- Tacos or nachos.
A mixed medley of meat and vegetables is a great way to stretch a little bit of meat over a few days or to feed a large crowd.
