How to clean a couch: Step-by-step video tutorial for leather, fabric

Many of us spend a lot of time on our couches. Whether it’s a spot to get cozy while watching “Nobody Wants This” on Netflix, a comfortable place to sit and catch up with loved ones or a launching pad when your team scores a touchdown, couches can get a lot of use.
But as much as we love our couches, we don’t love cleaning them and often neglect the mess that, quite literally, slips through the cracks. The task can seem like a huge lift, but here are some easy steps to help rid your comfy couch of crumbs and evict the hidden dust bunnies living rent-free underneath.
Watch this video for some easy tips on how to clean in and around your couch.
How to clean a couch
If you need to spot clean your couch, check its label for specific instructions. The best way to clean will often be indicated with a letter. Typically, a “W” denotes that the fabric should be cleaned with water, and an “S” means you should opt for a solvent-based cleaner instead.
When cleaning your couch, start with the easy stuff, like throw pillows. Many can be tossed in the laundry or have removable covers you can throw in the wash.
Next, remove the couch cushions. Check if they also have removable covers you can toss in the wash. If not, grab your handheld vacuum to remove any dirt, crumbs and dead skin from the cushion. Don’t forget to get the seatback cushions, too.
And, since you already have the cushions removed and the vacuum in hand, thoroughly clean the area where the cushions sit on the couch. You might find that a line of dirt, crumbs and other debris has made a home inside your couch.
Next, evict all the dust bunnies that have taken up residence underneath and behind your couch. If your furniture is especially large or heavy, consider purchasing or making furniture movers to make cleaning around it easier.
To make your own, slip some cardboard under the legs of the couch and slide.
Finally, once everything is back in place, spray the couch with a fabric refresher to get everything smelling nice. You can buy these at the store or make your own with just three ingredients.
