Garlic is purported to have many health benefits for those who aren't vampires. Some of the things that make it so good also happen to be what gives it that strong odor many enjoy wafting through their homes.

As Ilisa Nussbaum, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at Yale Children's Hospital, previously told Paste BN, “(Garlic) has these compounds that are called organic sulfur compounds. That's what gives it that smell. Onions have that too. It gives it that strong odor, and it has a ton of antioxidants that really protect your cells from damage.”

Easily peel garlic

To easily peel garlic:

  1. Microwave the entire bulb for about 20 seconds.
  2. Let it cool enough to touch.
  3. Open the bulb and remove the cloves.
  4. Peel the skin off the cloves with ease.

This also works for individual cloves. Just cut off the bottom, put them in a microwave-safe dish and microwave it for 10-15 seconds. Let them cool before peeling the skin off with ease.

Peeling garlic can be messy, so use a plate or paper towel to catch all the pieces and make cleanup a breeze.

If you’re looking for an alternative, microwave-free method: shake it off (literally)! Put the cloves in a container or jar, seal with a lid, then shake! The skin comes right off.

How to remove garlic smell from hands

Of course, there's no hiding the fact that despite all its health benefits, garlic makes your fingers smell. If you'd rather not carry that odor around with you, try one of these methods to easily shake it off.

Rub your hands on stainless steel. Run your hands under cool water while rubbing them on a stainless steel item in your kitchen. The metal of the stainless steel will break down those compounds, attract them to the metal and the water will wash them away.

Play it safe and avoid picking a knife for this, instead opt for a ladle, spoon, measuring cup… anything that’s stainless steel and not sharp.

If you regularly use garlic, consider buying a stainless steel odor-removing bar. This can also rid your hands of onion and fish odors.

If you don’t have stainless steel, reach for some citrus. Slice open a lemon or lime and rub it on your fingers before washing your hands like normal. Be careful if you have any cuts, as it may sting.

Baking soda can also be used to get the odor off your hands. Add water and create a paste, rub the mixture all over your hands. Then, wash them like normal.
