Essential gardening tools
In addition to picking plants you like and that thrive in your area (this map from the U.S. Department of Agriculture can help with the latter), these are the tools you’ll want to have handy:
- Pruning shears.
- Hand shovel.
- Watering can. Keep in mind the can will be significantly heavier when it's filled with water, so pick a size and material that you will be able to carry comfortably.
- Hand rake.
- Gardening gloves.
If your plants are living outside, it’s also worth having:
- Hose
- Adjustable hose nozzle.
- Watering wand.
- Kneeling pad.
Organize gardening tools
Getting your tools is step one. The next step is keeping them organized and in one spot. You can opt for specialty shelves or a gardening shed, but that’s not necessary. Smaller, handheld tools can easily be stored and transported in a bucket or gardening tote.
You can store the tools inside the bucket or opt to add a bucket organizer that carries the tools in pockets on the outside. This frees up the inside for storing potting soil or collecting yard scraps and weeds. If you’re opting for a bucket, don’t forget the lid. This will turn the bucket into a seat and can help make gardening a little more comfortable.
