Naan is a super delicious bread that's surprisingly easy to make at home. It can be paired with a tikka masala or butter chicken or used for naan tacos or flatbread pizza.  With such a simple recipe, it’s also a fun way to get little sous chefs involved when it’s time to portion and roll out the naan.

Whether you're cooking or baking, using a food scale is a more accurate way to measure and portion out ingredients than measuring cups and spoons.

Watch this video to see how to make fluffy naan at home.

Easy naan recipe

First, gather all your ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour.
  • 7g salt.
  • 10g sugar.
  • 150ml warm water.
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast.
  • 150g plain yogurt, room temperature preferred.
  • 25g oil or melted butter, slightly cooled.
  • Additional oil for cooking.
  • Additional butter for finished naan.

To make naan:

  1. Activate your yeast by combining the packet with warm water. Set it aside for five minutes.
  2. Combine dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Combine yogurt and oil (or butter) with the yeast mixture.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry. Mix them until a dough ball forms. This may take a few minutes with the mixer, so be patient and let it do its thing. A mixer with a hook attachment will make it a lot easier, but the ingredients can also be mixed by hand.
  5. Remove the dough from the hook and form it into a ball. Bonus tip: Wet hands are useful when handling sticky dough.
  6. Let the dough proof. Cover it and set it in a warm place for around 90 minutes until the dough rises and doubles in size.
  7. Divide it into eight equal pieces on a floured surface.
  8. Form each piece into a ball, then roll it out into an oval or shape of your choice; just be sure they're thin!
  9. Heat a cast iron skillet with a generous coating of oil.
  10. Cook the naan in the skillet for about one to two minutes on one side until bubbles form. Then, flip it for 30 seconds to lightly cook the other side. It should be lightly toasted, soft and spongy. Depending on the size of your skillet, you’ll need to cook them one at a time.
  11. Brush each naan with melted butter when done (optional) and serve.

If you want to make garlic naan or add other flavors to it, press the garlic into the dough before cooking.

Can you freeze naan

Yes, you can freeze naan!

Let it cool completely. Then, tightly wrap the individual pieces of bread with plastic wrap and place them in an airtight container or freezer bag before popping them in the freezer, where they will last for a couple of months.
