Heating an entire home can be expensive. Bumping up the thermostat a couple of degrees can add up faster than you realize. Plus, it takes time for the temperature to adjust enough for you to be cozy, and you don't want to wait when you’re cold!

Layering up with clothes and blankets is a simple and free way to warm up, but you can also enlist the help of a space heater. While the personal devices won’t do much to heat your whole home, they are great in smaller areas to add supplemental heat where you need it most, like in a bedroom or office.

You can also make a personal heater using a terracotta pot and a candle. This might be a great alternative when there isn't an outlet to plug into.

Watch this video for six things you need to know before using a space heater.

Space heater safety tips

When you’re buying a space heater, look for one that has built-in safety features, like automatic shutoff. Often, this means the heater will turn off after a set amount of time or if it falls over.

When using space heaters, DO:

  • Plug it directly into a wall.
  • Give it a clear 3-foot radius, and keep it clear of flammable items like furniture and blankets.
  • Place it on a flat surface.

Can I leave a space heater on overnight?

No. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) advises turning space heaters off before going to bed or leaving the room.

If you need additional heat overnight, add layers using additional clothes and blankets
