School is almost back in session, and with that comes a new list of school supplies your little scholar will need. Pencils and notepads are easy enough to pick out, but a lot of schools now are requiring students to bring in headphones—whether they’re back in session at school or still working virtually. It can be hard to know what kind of headphones to get, though: Wired or wireless? A cool color versus a comfy design? And what features that aren’t super visible should parents be looking for?
We’ve rounded up all the best kids’ headphones before, making our picks with an ear toward audio quality, volume limiting and comfort. But which stores offer the best deals on our picks, and the sets that other cool, concerned parents really love? We know time is important and school is coming up fast, so we did the work for you. Below, you’ll find a guide to what to look for in a good set of kids’ headphones, as well as a checklist of all the best headphones you can find online at retailers like Amazon, Target, Best Buy, Walmart, and more.

What to look for in a good pair of kids’ headphones
According to TJ Donegan, Reviewed’s executive editor and resident dad, you’re going to want to look for a few things. First, you’re going to want to make sure that any headphones you get your kid come with volume-limiting capability. As TJ puts it, “Noise-induced hearing loss is a real concern and can impact your child's long-term health and development, so most experts recommend volume-limiting headphones for kids. These help by keeping the playback volume to a relatively safe level, though experts still recommend keeping your devices' volume set to about 60% for 60 minutes at a time.”
The headphones that made our list of the best options for kids were all tested for durability, style, comfort and sound quality as well. The ones we haven’t tested that are listed below were selected based on a preponderance of overwhelmingly positive user reviews on their respective sites.
It’s worth noting that, though some schools specify which types of headphones you should get for your little scholar, in general we prefer wireless options, since they’ll work on technology that might not have a traditional headphone jack, like newer iPads and iPhones.
Where can you buy kids' headphones?
While you can buy kids’ headphones everywhere from the airport to Costco, the quality of the headphones available might vary. There are good headphones available at affordable prices, but use caution if a deal seems too good to be true. Those $5 headphones that look cool and seem like a great deal probably aren’t worth even that, and you’ll end up having to get something better down the road anyway.
Here’s where to buy some of our favorite sets of kids' headphones, as well as ones that shoppers really seem to love.
