Growing up in the Ashkenazi Jewish faith, I celebrated Passover every year, but it wasn’t until I turned 21 that I started to appreciate it. After all, a holiday that restricts what you can eat and disrupts your normal routine is no fun for a kid.
However, once I graduated from grape juice and learned that you not only get to drink four glasses of wine, but are required to, during the Passover Seder meal, I changed my tune.
Every element of the Passover Seder meal has meaning behind it, and its four glasses of wine are no different. The meaning varies slightly from rabbi to rabbi, but at its core it is supposed to be a celebration of freedom and the Jewish people’s liberation from slavery.
As with all the foods consumed during Passover, the wine needs to be kosher, and, specifically, kosher for Passover. Practicing Jews know that this means that the wine needs to have been produced and packaged in a chametz-free (chametz is grain that has risen or fermented and is usually an ingredient in bread, pasta, beer and more). Unfortunately, kosher for Passover wine can be, to put it kindly, dreck (Yiddish for dirt).
To make sure you’re celebrating the Passover Seder meal properly and toasting with rich flavors, we’ve sought out and tried a few kosher for Passover wines that taste amazing and are holiday approved.
