If you have oily skin, you may think you're in the clear during the winter because you’re out of the oil-inducing toasty temperatures of summer, but you’re not as affected by cold climates as people with dry skin. To a certain degree, that may be true: You might not see flaky skin or feel tightness on your face. However, oily skin needs as much moisture as dry skin to avoid dehydration.

With the right products, you can nail down a skincare and makeup routine that’ll ensure moisture is locked in without causing the skin to appear oily.
1. This buildable skin tint from Fenty Beauty
It seems Rihanna’s makeup line, Fenty Beauty, rarely misses the mark, and the brand’s Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint is no exception. This lightweight foundation promises up to medium coverage, depending on how many layers you apply, and a “natural” finish.
It’s available in 25 shades—from light to deep with neutral, cool and warm undertones—and you can blend it with a brush or makeup sponge. To tamp down shine and ensure it stays in place throughout the day, dust the brand’s Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder on top.
2. This skin and makeup-gripping primer from Milk Makeup
People with oily skin should apply a tacky primer onto the face prior to any other base products, like foundation or concealer. A fan-favorite is the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Hydrating Makeup Primer, which went viral for its gel consistency that instantly cools the skin. It contains hydrating superstars like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide that ensure your skin stays hydrated while wearing makeup.
Post-moisturizer and SPF, apply one to two pumps on the skin in a thin layer. Allow it to sit for a minute to absorb. Finally, apply your foundation and all other makeup items on top.
3. This hydrating face wash that gently cleanses from Cerave
Cerave’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a clear winner amongst face washes, as proven by it’s Reviewed-approved status and 100,000-plus Amazon reviews. It contains moisturizing and skin-protecting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin. The formula is fragrance-free, making it a great option for people with sensitive skin, too.
The brand says that it can clean skin, ridding it from makeup and impurities, without stripping its natural oils. Plus, the drugstore-priced bottle will take you far, as Reviewed’s tester claims a little formula goes a long way.
4. This satisfying setting mist from Morphe
After testing more than a dozen setting sprays at Reviewed, we named Morphe’s Continous Setting Mist our “Best Value” pick. Not only is it a more affordable option, it felt more hydrating than a majority of the ones we tested. This is thanks to its hydrating ingredients, including glycerin, cucumber fruit water and grape seed extracts.
After applying your full face of makeup, hold the spray about 10 inches from your face and spritz it all over. The aerosol can allows for a super-fine, even mist all over the skin.
5. This pore-tightening toner from Glow Recipe
When it comes to toners, you want to avoid one containing harsh ingredients, like astringents, that’ll dry out the skin. Instead, go for one that aims to hydrate while providing the pore-tightening benefits of a toner. For that, grab Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner, which claims to hydrate and soothe with hyaluronic acid, cactus water and watermelon extract as well as exfoliate with PHAs and BHAs (gentle acids).
Apply the toner onto clean skin in the morning and evening using your fingers or a cotton pad, and make sure you apply sunscreen during the daytime, as exfoliants can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
6. This dewy tinted moisturizer with SPF from Saie
Want to combine three steps at once? You can add moisture, light coverage, and mineral sunscreen to your skin with the Saie Slip Tint Dewy Moisturizer. The 3-in-1 contains hyaluronic acid and pansy flower to hydrate the skin and licorice root extract to brighten its appearance. The result is dewy, even-looking skin. It’s available in 10 shades, ranging from “very light” with pink undertones to “rich” with neutral undertones.
To get the promised UV protection, apply one to two pumps of Slip Tint to a clean face and massage it into the skin using your fingers. Use it alone or continue on with the rest of your makeup routine.
7. This skin-softening moisturizer from First Aid Beauty
Every skincare routine should include a face moisturizer, and at Reviewed, we recommend the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. Without causing the skin to look or feel greasy, the cream relieves itching with colloidal oatmeal, moisturizes and protects with shea butter and soothes with allantoin. Our tester says it left her skin feeling softer and more hydrated, and despite its thickness, the formula spread easily across her skin.
Apply a dollop of cream to your face in the morning and at night. You can also use this on dry patches or all over your body for smooth skin.
8. This overnight mask from Youth To The People
Even if you have oily skin, you’re not immune to spots of dryness, especially during the winter. Youth to the People’s Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Night Mask is a great product to add to your chilly-climate skincare routine. The mask contains brightening vitamin C, hydrating squalane and hyaluronic acid and skin-protecting antioxidants.
On the nights you use this, you can skip moisturizer, meaning using it won’t add an extra step in your routine. Apply a layer of the cream as your last skincare step, allow it to absorb into the skin and head to bed. You can use this daily.
9. This gentle cleansing oil from Dermalogica
Cleansing balms or oils get rid of makeup, skincare and even excess oil after a long day. Despite popular belief, you can use both oils and balms on oily skin—in fact, it’s a great idea when it’s colder out and skin could use extra moisture at every step. The Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil is great for this purpose: It contains vitamin E and kukui nut oil, both of which work to support and soften your skin while removing makeup.
Dispense a pump or two into dry hands, massage it into the skin, then introduce water to create a light emulsion. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
10. This lightweight eye cream from The Inkey List
Your under-eyes are particularly sensitive areas of skin and deserve gentle care through the likes of an eye cream, like The Inkey List’s Caffeine Eye Cream. The lightweight formula contains caffeine to reduce puffiness and “Matrixyl 3000,” a peptide that claims to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Gently pat a pea-sized amount into the skin after cleansing in the morning and at night.
