The Short List: Facebook sorry for mind experiment, Target nixes guns
Facebook says it's sorry for playing games with your mind
Facebook is apologizing — kind of — for using our news feeds to mess with our emotions. Facebook's No. 2 executive Sheryl Sandberg said the psych experiment on nearly 700,000 users to see if Facebook could manipulate moods was "poorly communicated." In the week-long experiment, users were exposed either to positive or negative posts to see if the feelings would spread on Facebook. British regulators said they're investigating the experiment.
Tropical Storm Arthur is trying to ruin Fourth of July
Think of the worst possible thing to happen on Fourth of July weekend. Yup, that. Tropical Storm Arthur, the Atlantic hurricane season's first named storm, strengthened Wednesday and was forecast to grow into a hurricane by July 4. It's taking aim at North Carolina's Outer Banks and is already impacting the East Coast. In Boston, the annual July 4th Boston Pops concert and fireworks was moved up to Thursday night because of the threat of severe weather Friday.

Obama tries to speed up deportations of children at the border
The border situation is heating up. There's been a flood of kids crossing the U.S. border illegally. The White House is trying to figure out what to do about it, and the idea they came up with has some people really angry. Obama's proposal for Congress is to speed up deportations of child migrants caught at the border. Right now, if a child is caught by Border Patrol agents, they're handed to the Department of Health and Human Services, which coordinates care for them, finds them safe housing and helps advise them on their legal rights as their immigration cases are decided. Obama wants Border Patrol agents to be able to send the children back to their home country without going through HHS. Immigration attorneys say that's wack. They said the 2008 law Obama wants to change is there to protect kids who are victims of trafficking and violence.

Ukraine agrees to another cease-fire
It's cease-fire whiplash. Ukraine's foreign minister agreed to a cease-fireWednesday after a four-way meeting with Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France. This isn't the first one. Ukraine and Russia had agreed to another shaky cease-fire last week, but Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ended it Tuesday. Fighting in Ukraine between government troops and pro-Russia separatists has taken more than 400 lives since April.
Target to shoppers: Don't pack heat
Target doesn't think guns are family friendly. The retailer posted a notice on its website Wednesday that said it is "respectfully" requesting shoppers not bring guns into its stores. Target says guns in its stores are "at odds" with its family atmosphere. Gun rights advocates have made headlines in recent months by openly bringing weapons into some Target stores, a demonstration of their rights to openly carry firearms in public.
