5 things you need to know this weekend

Set phasers to science because World Space Week begins

Grab your spacesuit as World Space Week begins its appreciation of skies, stars and planets Saturday. This year's theme, "Space: Guiding Your Way," focuses on satellite navigation. There will be documentary screenings, discussions with astronauts and even a Halloween-themed party in Tulsa. World Space Week began after a declaration from the United Nations in 1999 and has continued since.

Jews around the world observe Yom Kippur

Jews will fast throughout Saturday in observance of Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement. It's one of the highest holidays in the Jewish faith and serves as a time to forgive others and reflect on the changes of the past year. Fasting is an integral part of the holiday, which started at sundown Friday and will end at sundown Saturday.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for... video games?

Marin County Police officials are asking children throughout California to trade their violent toys and video games for something a little sweeter: a scoop or two of ice cream. Starting Oct. 4, families can go to locations on Saturdays throughout the month to trade their toy guns, video games and the like for Ben & Jerry's. Sounds like a pretty delicious trade.

MLB playoffs continue as teams vie for their top division title

The games continue through Sunday as both the American League and National League whittle down their respective teams before the World Series this month. Eight teams from across the country will continue into post-season play before advancing to the World Series. American Veterans Disabled for Life memorial dedicated in Washington

The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington will be dedicated Sunday, 14 years after it was authorized by President Bill Clinton in 2001. Made of granite and glass, the memorial commemorates veterans alive and dead who were disabled while serving in the military. It will be located by the U.S. Capitol building, and President Obama is scheduled to speak at its dedication.
