U.S. tries to stop Islamic State militants from gaining access to Turkey

Kobani is a big deal, and the Islamic State wants it. It's a strategic town on the Turkish-Syrian border that ISIL is trying to seize. Kurdish forces are trying desperately to fight back, and today the U.S.- led coalition launched airstrikes around the town to try to help. If militants capture the city, it would help them control Kurdish areas that have been difficult to secure and give them access to cross into Turkey, which would be bad.

Where in the world is Kim Jong Un?

We don't know what's going on with Kim Jong Un. North Korea's supreme leader hasn't been seen in public in more than a month. It's especially strange because a high-level North Korean delegation made a surprise visit to South Korea last week to apparently talk peace, and he was nowhere to be found. His disappearance from public view has stirred rumors of coups, health problems and even a low-grade civil war in the Hermit Kingdom. He was last seen Sept. 3 attending a concert with his wife, Ri Sol Ju.

David Muir did something no one at ABC has done in five years

Cheers for the new kid on the block. David Muir is the dreamy guy who took over for Diane Sawyer last month, and for the first time in more than five years, ABC's World News Tonight has bested NBC's Nightly News. Muir drew across-the-board ratings wins for ABC for the week of Sept. 29, according to Nielsen Media Research. Evening news wars are heating up.

Too many drugs are contaminated, and it's a huge safety risk

This is scary stuff. Two years after contaminated drugs linked to a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts killed 64 and sickened more than 750 with fungal meningitis, the industry still struggles with serious safety problems affecting thousands of patients, a Paste BN examination shows. A regulatory crackdown by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since the outbreak in October 2012 has led to an unprecedented spate of drug recalls by compounding pharmacies — and scores of citations for bad practices.
