5 things you need to know this weekend

Tropical Storm Ana could approach Hawaii

The storm, which is still tropical as of Friday, is forecast to pass near Hawaii over the weekend, potentially as a Category 1 hurricane. Southern parts of the Big Island and Kauai are at greatest risk of flooding from rain and tropical storm-force winds up to 70 mph. Damaged trees, power outages and isolated mudslides are all risks for the island. The forecast calls for the storm to pass southwest of the Big Island on Saturday before heading south of Oahu on Sunday and Kauai the following day.

Do you know Rakeem Cato? Well, he could be making college football history

Marshall University quarterback Rakeem Cato has thrown 38 consecutive scoring passes, and Saturday, if he throws his 39th, he will break the NCAA record. Russell Wilson, starter for the Seattle Seahawks, holds the record. Marshall's Thundering Herd will face off against FIU's Golden Panthers in Cato's home state of Florida.

A massive comet to zoom past Mars

No, this isn't a sci-fi movie. A comet the size of a small mountain will whiz past Mars on Sunday at a distance of less than 87,000 miles, which isn't much in astronomical terms. That's so close that Mars will be swathed in the comet's dust and gas; so close that NASA decided to move its Mars orbiters out of the path of potential danger; so close that such a very-near-miss by a comet has never been recorded for Earth.
