The Short List: Orionid meteor shower; Indiana serial killer; Apple Pay

Reward your insomnia with the Orionid meteor shower

Can't sleep? We got you. The Orionid meteor shower is tonight and tomorrow, and it could be the best year yet. To see the meteors, look to the east and southeast between midnight and dawn. If you're lucky enough to have a cloudless sky, you could see as many as 25 meteors an hour. Fun fact: The Orionids get their name because they seem to come from the constellation Orion the Hunter, but they're really bits of debris from Halley's Comet. (The actual comet can be seen only every 75 years or so — the next sighting is in 2062.)

You can now Apple Pay — sometimes

Apple Pay is live. The new mobile-payments system lets you buy things in stores with the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus (sorry, old iPhones don't work) or online with the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3, which will be released Friday. Now that it's live, here's how to use it. Paste BN's Ed Baig tested it out in the real world today and said his first attempt "worked like a charm." His second, not so much. To get the new service rolling, Apple launched its iOS 8.1 update today, which enables support for Apple Pay. Here's what else the new software includes.

Hannah Graham suspect indicted on rape charges

There's been another development in the Hannah Graham case. Jesse Matthew, the suspect in custody related to the abduction of the University of Virginia student, has been indicted on charges related to a 2005 rape. Matthew was arrested last month in Texas in connection with Graham's disappearance. He has also been linked to the 2009 death of a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, Morgan Harrington. On Saturday, police found human remains they think might be Graham's. Investigators across Virginia have been poring over records to figure out if Matthew is connected to other cases of missing or slain young women. Police said forensic evidence from Harrington's killing is linked by DNA to the 2005 rape.

Dallas official really wants the city to avoid Ebola hysteria

It was a good day in Dallas, and the city wants to keep it that way. Dozens of people who had contact with the only U.S.-diagnosed Ebola fatality, Thomas Eric Duncan, were headed back into their communities after their 21-day monitoring period ended without any signs of the virus. More than 100 people are still being monitored. Judge Clay Jenkins, Dallas County's top elected official, pleaded with the city to be welcoming to residents resuming their normal lives, including five children who are returning to school this week. He stressed the group posed no threat to the community.

Suspected serial killer's spree may go back 20 years

He may have been killing for decades. Police said today that convicted sex offender Darren Deon Vann confessed to killing seven women in Indiana, and police think there may be more victims. Police were led to Vann after finding the body of Afrika Hardy, 19, at a motel Friday. Vann had solicited Hardy, who was involved in a prostitution scheme. While he was being questioned by police, Vann admitted his involvement in Hardy's death and then told them he was involved in several other killings. Investigators are now looking into killings that date to the 1990s.
