5 things you need to know on Friday
1. Legendary blonde Marilyn Monroe's past is up for grabs
The iconic bombshell's intimate letters and property, including a "heartbreaking" letter from her then-soon-to-be ex-husband, baseball great Joe DiMaggio, go to auction starting Friday. The auction will take place at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif., as part of The Lost Archive of Marilyn Monroe collection. Many letters in the archive are dated 1956.
2. President Obama sets new Defense Secretary nominee
Obama's replacement for Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is far from secured. In fact, a name hasn't even been confirmed yet. Officials close to the White House say it will be former deputy Ashton Carter, but spokesman Josh Earnest said on Thursday that "the president will announce for himself who the nominee is." If nominated, Carter will still need to be confirmed by the Senate.
3. And the Grammy nominations go to...?
The Recording Academy is ready to rock. On Friday morning, it will announce almost all of this year's top contenders, including what is expected to be a packed race for Best New Artist. Want to know who will be up for the night's top prize? Well, you'll have to tune into CBS' A Very Grammy Christmas at 9 p.m. ET to find out. Ariana Grande, Pharrell and Tim McGraw are just a few of the artists performing.

4. Grande means big, not small for new mega-Starbucks
Going back to where it all began, Starbucks is going to give Seattle an extra shot of espresso. Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room opens its specially carved teak doors on Friday. At 15,000 square feet, it brings designer foods, a lavish setting and craft coffees together in one place.
5. Jobs, jobs and more jobs
The Labor Department's payrolls report was expected to show 225,000 payroll gains by businesses, as well as federal, state and local governments in November. The unemployment rate was forecast to hold steady at 5.8%.
And, the essentials:
Weather: Much of the eastern half of the nation will deal with some form of precipitation Friday, as will the West Coast.
