D.C. transit police: Officer fatally shoots man in Metro

A Washington, D.C., police officer fatally shot a man inside a tunnel connected to a Metro subway station near the Capitol Hill neighborhood, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Transit Police confirmed late Thursday.

At about 8:53 p.m. EDT, police received a call about an unauthorized person inside the subway tunnel connected to the Potomac Avenue station, Morgan Dye, spokeswoman with the Metro police agency, said.

"During that response there was an officer involved shooting," Dye said. "There are no injuries to any officers but an adult male was fatally injured during the incident."

Dye had no information as to whether the person who was shot was armed or about the circumstances of the incident. She said the agency would release more details as they became available.

The incident took place on the westbound track headed toward Virginia, Dye said.

The station has been temporarily closed to the public and trains in both directions are bypassing the station, she said. The transit agency was providing shuttle buses for passengers.

The Metropolitan Police Department had no details to add and deferred to the Transit Police.

No officers were injured in the incident, the Metro police agency said.
