Eleven people have been hurt and a section of highway was shut down after a gas pipeline explosion near Fresno, Calif., according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
Some of the injured were inmates from the Fresno County Jail, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The blast erupted after a backhoe struck a 12-inch gas line, the Fresno Fire Department reported.
The incident is under investigation, according to the fire department.
The blast caused a section of Highway 99 to be shut down, the Fresno Fire Department told KCRA.
At least four of the injured are in critical condition and at least one is in serious condition, according to the news organization.
