2016 to dominate Sunday shows
WASHINGTON — The 2016 presidential race will be front and center on the Sunday news shows this week, with freshly declared GOP candidate Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and potential candidates former Maryland Democratic governor Martin O'Malley and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., making appearances.
CBS' Bob Schieffer interviews Rubio, R-Fla., who announced his candidacy last week, for Face the Nation. Schieffer also will speak with O'Malley, who is rumored to be weighing a bid. Graham will appear on Fox News Sunday.
The Iran nuclear deal and Congress' reaction to it will also be discussed on the shows. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and ranking member Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., will appear on CNN's State of the Union to discuss the deal they reached last week.
The bizarre landing of a gyrocopter on the Capitol lawn last week by a Florida mailman could also come up when House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, appears on ABC's This Week.
Here's the full lineup:
- CBS' Face the Nation: Rubio sits down with host Schieffer to talk about his campaign for the White House. Schieffer also speaks with O'Malley, who has said he will decide by late May whether to run against former secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who announced her candidacy last week. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will discuss Clinton's campaign.
- NBC's Meet the Press: Republican Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, who said last week that he is "seriously considering" running for president in 2016 will appear. Host Chuck Todd will also talk to Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe of Virginia.
- CNN's State of the Union: Corker and Cardin will talk about their intense negotiations last week that led to a rare bipartisan deal on legislation that would allow Congress to review a deal reached with Iran and to block to lifting of congressional sanctions against Iran. And former senator Jim Webb, D-Va., will discuss whether he is weighing a bid against Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president.
- Fox News Sunday: Host Chris Wallace will interview Graham about his thoughts on a potential 2016 campaign as well as the Corker-Cardin compromise on congressional review of an Iran deal. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will also talk 2016 and whether he will run. And Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, will talk about the gyrocopter landing Wednesday, when mailman Douglas Mark Hughes sought to deliver letters to members of Congress about campaign finance reform but was charged instead with violating national defense airspace.
- ABC's This Week: McCaul will discuss homeland security threats, including the gyrocopter landing, and Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., will talk about the Clinton campaign.
