5 things you need to know Friday
1. Suspect in Charleston shooting to make court appearance
Dylann Storm Roof, the man who allegedly shot and killed nine people in a South Carolina church, is expected to appear in court Friday afternoon for a bond hearing, according to media reports. Roof, 21, is suspected of killing six women and three men inside of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. He was captured Thursday in Shelby, N.C., 14 hours after the rampage. Details of Roof's life have started to emerge, including arrests earlier this year for trespassing and a misdemeanor drug charge. Meanwhile, the people of Charleston continue to mourn the victims and groups around the country plan to remember the people who died during their annual Juneteenth celebrations.
2. Brian Williams speaks out to Matt Lauer
NBC News' prodigal son returns. Brian Williams, the former host of NBC Nightly News, will make his first public remarks about his suspension in an interview with NBC's Today show co-host Matt Lauer. The pre-recorded interview will air Friday morning on the Today show and Friday evening on NBC Nightly News. NBC also announced that Lester Holt will take over as permanent anchor at NBC Nightly News, and that Williams will return to MSNBC as a breaking news anchor — a move that media columnist Rem Rieder calls "a truly terrible decision."

3. Golden State Warriors set to parade through Oakland
For the first time in 40 years, the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy is back in the Bay Area. Stephen Curry and the Warriors will celebrate their championship season on Friday with a parade and a victory rally beginning at 10 a.m. PT. Although the Bay Area has seen championship success from its San Francisco teams, the city of Oakland has not seen a championship season since the Athletics won the World Series in 1989.
4. Taiwan launches its Silicon Valley innovation center
Taiwan will become the ninth country — and the first Asian one — to open a state-sponsored "bridge center" in Silicon Valley on Friday. The Taiwan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center in San Jose will offer subsidized office space and housing assistance to Taiwanese entrepreneurs trying to break into the Silicon Valley ecosystem. Other countries with Silicon Valley outposts: France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.
5. Deadline for OPM to notify 4.2 million hack attack victims
Friday is the deadline for the Office of Personnel Management to notify 4.2 million federal workers that their personnel records have been compromised in one of two major hack attacks on the OPM. OPM Director Katherine Archuleta told a House panel Tuesday that a separate data breach may have compromised highly sensitive records of an untold number of current, former and prospective employees who underwent background checks to obtain security clearances.
