5 things you need to know this weekend
1. Grieving Charleston looks to move beyond the hate
Charleston is still mourning after an attack Wednesday on its historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. On Sunday, many of the city's historic churches will ring their bells at 10 a.m. in memory of victims shot and killed during a Bible study. Members of the public are invited to ring hand bells in a show of solidarity. This weekend marks the first Sunday since the nine black church-goers were killed by a lone white gunman, identified by police as Dylann Storm Roof, 21. Pastors across the country are re-evaluating the safety of their churches in the wake of the attack. Here's how to help the victims' families.
2. Swimmer Missy Franklin makes pro debut
USA's Olympic darling Missy Franklin is officially a professional swimmer, making her debut this weekend in Santa Clara, Calif., at the Arena Pro Swim Series. For the first time in her life, the four-time gold medal-winning Olympian is collecting a paycheck for her work in the pool and has a carefully chosen endorsement deal (Speedo). This weekend's meet is her final tuneup before the world championships in July. And while these meets are important, her coach says their goals are set for 2016 in Rio. "The Olympics is it," Todd Schmitz says.
3. Ferrell, Wiig present A Deadly Adoption
Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig are giving new life to deadpan humor in a new Lifetime thriller. In A Deadly Adoption, the Saturday Night Live alums play a married couple housing a pregnant woman in hopes of adopting her child. Things take a dark turn when the woman tries to steal the wife's life. Sounds like most Lifetime movies, right? Well, we're not entirely sure if it's a TV-movie spoof yet, but the trailer is so dramatic it's comedic. Paste BN's Arienne Thompson will be live tweeting the highlights at @USATODAYLife, starting at 8 p.m. ET, Saturday. Watch for a full recap at life.usatoday.com.
4. Don't forget to wish dad a Happy Father's Day
Sunday is Father's Day, so here's a bit of gift advice straight from dads at Paste BN: We don't need ties (everything is business casual these days), and we don't need golf balls (who has time to play when weekends are spent driving kids around to their sporting events?). Here's a gift idea for every budget. This Illinois dad is cycling over 2,000 miles to show what it means to be a dedicated father. And this Arizona family of quintuplets is excited to celebrate the day together. If you're looking for a touching read, this letter from a dad to his son with a rare genetic condition will tug at your heart strings. Have photos of or with dad? Share them with us here.
5. You're gonna need a bigger boat: 'Jaws' swims back into theaters
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Steven Spielberg's summer classic returns to theaters June 21 and June 24 in select cinemas nationwide. The events mark the 40th anniversary of the original Jaws. The 1975 film stars Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss on the hunt for a great white shark terrorizing Amity Island.
