5 things you need to know Tuesday
1. Heat wave continues for a third day across U.S.
Searing temperatures will continue Tuesday from Oklahoma to New York City, according to the Weather Channel. As of mid-afternoon Monday, more than 53 million people were under a heat advisory, the Weather Channel reported. Temperatures reached the upper 90s with heat indexes into the 100s. Several city emergency officials advised people to seek out cool environments, wear loose clothing, limit power use to prevent outages and drink a lot of water. The unrelenting heat should ease up in a couple days.

2. John Kasich joins the GOP field, launches White House bid
Ohio Gov. John Kasich launches his 2016 presidential campaign Tuesday. He'll be the 16th Republican to enter the race and plans to announce his bid at his alma mater, Ohio State University. Kasich is a popular second-term governor, an 18-year veteran of Congress and a previous presidential candidate during the 2000 election. Former president George W. Bush beat him for the GOP's support, marking Kasich's only failed election. He's also a father of teenage twin girls and a good friend to U2's Bono. Here are 126 things to know about the 21 Republican and Democratic candidates (including Kasich) who have announced 2016 campaigns.
3. More kids live in poverty than in 2008, report says
A higher percentage of children live in poverty now than did during the Great Recession in 2008, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. About 22% of children in the U.S. lived below the poverty line in 2013, compared with 18% in 2008, the foundation's 2015 Kids Count Data Book reported. "The fact that it's happening is disturbing on lots of levels," said Laura Speer, the associate director at the Casey Foundation. "Those kids often don't have the access to the things they need to thrive."
4. Jon Stewart hosts Obama one last time
President Obama will give a final interview Tuesday to Jon Stewart before Stewart leaves The Daily Show on Aug. 6. Obama appeared six times on the show, two as president. He first appeared in 2005 as the Illinois senator and most recently during the 2012 campaign. No stranger to late-night shows, POTUS also helped say goodbye to David Letterman on the Late Show and Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report. Trevor Noah takes over as host of The Daily Show in September.
5. Who needs Prime Day? Jet.com launches new e-commerce model
Jet.com takes on retail giants Amazon and Walmart on Tuesday focusing on a new e-commerce model: the bigger your basket, the more you save. Described as part Costco membership, part Amazon online mall, shoppers spend $50 a year for a membership and get the Web's lowest prices on 10 million-plus goods. With average savings of 10% to 15% on most items, Jet's niche is the cost-conscious, from Millennials on a budget to Boomers hunting coupon-less savings. "It's simply about undercutting everyone," says founder Marc Lore.
