Americans hailed as heroes acted on 'instinct'

Three Americans hailed as heroes for their daring efforts on a train in France said Sunday that they acted out of instinct and that they were ready to fight to the death to stop the attack. "We just kind of acted, there wasn't much thinking going on," U.S. airman Spencer Stone said at a news conference in Paris. He added that he acted out of "survival — and for my friends and everybody else on the train." Stone and longtime friends Alek Skarlatos, an Oregon National Guardsman, and Sacramento State University student Anthony Sadler were on the high-speed train from Amsterdam to Paris when a Moroccan armed with a rifle, a box cutter and other weapons raced through the car. The men tackled and subdued him. Stone was seriously wounded and appeared at the press conference with his left arm in a sling. "He seemed like he was ready to fight to the end," Stone said. "So were we."

Panda twins born at Washington's National Zoo

The gender of twin pandas born Saturday at Washington's National Zoo may not be known for a month, but both appeared to be thriving Sunday, zoo officials said. Mei Xiang's babies checked in with one weighing about 3 ounces and the other almost 5 ounces, chief veterinarian Don Neiffer said. The cubs were vocalizing well and appeared strong, he said. "This is a critical period," Neiffer said. "Until these cubs are both out, walking around, acting normal, that's when we will exhale."

Big injury for the Packers

Receiver Jordy Nelson left in the first quarter of the Green Bay Packers' preseason game in Pittsburgh after crumpling to the ground without contact on a leaping catch, a potential season-altering injury. Nelson's initial diagnosis is a torn ACL, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Packers are awaiting MRI results for confirmation, Rapoport tweeted. The Packers confirmed Nelson has a knee injury but offered no further details. It would be a devastating injury for one of the team's most important players.

Usain Bolt edges Justin Gatlin in insanely close World Championship race

Usain Bolt claimed the gold medal at the 2015 IAAF World Championships 100m race in Beijing on Sunday, snapping Justin Gatlin's 28-race win streak. Gaitlin was leading the race going into the final stretch but broke down, allowing Bolt to overtake him at the last moment, eventually winning the race by 0.01 seconds. Bolt has been struggling with injuries for most of the season, but told the BBC after the race that this victory could provide a welcome shift in momentum: "This win means a lot because I've been struggling all season and I was having problems with my start. I knew I had to put all that behind me and just drive. I understand why everyone wanted me to win but I wanted top win for myself really. It's a big deal."

Tragedy strikes European air shows

Tragedy struck European air shows for the second straight day Sunday when a pilot was killed after two planes collided in the air over Switzerland. The crash occurred one day after 11 people died when a plane crashed onto a busy highway at an air show in Britain. The Swiss newspaper Blick reported that one pilot died and another parachuted to safety after the collision over the Dittingen Air Show. In Britain, the death toll is "highly likely" to rise to 11 or more from Saturday's crash of a vintage plane, Sussex assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry said Sunday.
