WASHINGTON — A White House official died Saturday after a biking accident during a charity ride to combat cancer.

Jake Brewer, a senior policy adviser with the Office of Chief Technology Officer, had "a brilliant mind, a big heart, and an insatiable desire to give back," President Obama said in a statement Sunday.

He "devoted his life to empowering people and making government work better for them," the president added.

Brewer, 34, of Alexandria, Va., collided with a vehicle while participating in the two-day, 150-mile Ride to Conquer Cancer that originated in Washington, D.C., The Washington Post reported.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Katharine Ham, and their daughter, Georgia, Obama said.

"We set out to recruit the best of the best to join their government and help us harness the power of technology and data to innovate new solutions for the 21st century," the president said. "Simply put, Jake was one of the best."
