5 things you need to know Monday

1. Will Chase Utley play in Game 3 after suspension for slide?

Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley has been suspended for Games 3 and 4 of the National League Division Series for his slide into second base Saturday night that broke the leg of Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada. Utley has appealed the suspension and, in a rare bit of expedience, his appeal will be heard Monday, according to a person familiar with the suspension who spoke to Paste BN Sports on condition of anonymity. The person said a ruling on Utley's appeal could be in by game time, which is scheduled for 8:37 p.m. ET.

2. USS Cole crew reflects on terror attack 15 years later

The war that began for most Americans on Sept. 11, 2001, began on Oct. 12, 2000 for the crew aboard the USS Cole when suicide bombers tore a hole in the side of the destroyer, leaving 17 U.S. sailors dead. In the aftermath of the attack, the crew had to remain on the ship for three weeks in stifling hot weather with no air conditioning. Being constantly surrounded by the sights and smells of the crime scene took a psychological toll on much of the crew. Many of them endured symptoms of post-traumatic stress and their fight to heal — while still remembering their shipmates who passed — continues today.

3. Not all Americans celebrating Columbus Day

More cities are recognizing Native Americans on Columbus Day this year as they revive a movement to change the name of the holiday to celebrate the history and contributions of indigenous cultures around the country. As the U.S. observes Columbus Day on Monday, it will also be Indigenous Peoples Day in at least nine cities for the first time this year, including Albuquerque; Portland, Oregon; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Olympia, Washington. The campaigns say the federal holiday honoring Christopher Columbus — and the parades and pageantry accompanying it — overlook a painful history of colonialism, enslavement, discrimination and land grabs that followed the Italian explorer’s 1492 arrival in the Americas.

4. Randy Quaid to be arraigned in Vermont court

Actor Randy Quaid is expected to be arraigned Monday in Vermont on a charge of being a fugitive from justice after police say he was taken into custody while trying to cross into the U.S. from Canada. The actor, perhaps best known for playing Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon's Vacation films, is wanted in Santa Barbara, Calif., to face felony vandalism charges filed in 2010 after he and his wife, Evi, were found squatting in a guesthouse of a home they previously owned. The pair skipped several court appearances and went to Canada, where Evi Quaid was granted citizenship. Randy Quaid’s bid to gain permanent residency was denied.

5. Southwest Airlines technical glitch continues

Southwest says it has solved a computer glitch that delayed hundreds of flights Sunday and threatened more headaches on Monday. The carrier tells Today in the Sky that it had fixed the glitch as of 8:10 a.m. ET and expects operations to return to normal Monday. About 300 flights had been delayed as of early Sunday afternoon, the Dallas-based airline said. The technical glitch is the latest to disrupt the nation's airline service in recent months. American Airlines blamed a computer failure for halting flights to three major hubs for for a two-hour window on Sept. 17. And nine days earlier United Airlines’ website crashed for more than two hours.
