New earthquake hits coastal Ecuador


A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Ecuador Tuesday, three days after a larger 7.8-magnitude temblor left more than 500 dead.

Tuesday's quake hit about 2.5 miles south by southwest of Muisne, Ecuador, and about 118 miles west by northwest of Quito, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at about a depth of 9.5 miles, according to Sputnik news organization.

The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 3.2 to 3.9, according to the Geophysical Institute at Ecuador's national polytechnic university.

There were no immediate reports of death, injuries or damage and no tsunami warnings, according to Sputnik.
