Two police officers injured in northern Calif.

Two police officers were injured in northern California Wednesday in two related incidents, according to police.

Both officers underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon at trauma centers, with one in critical condition and the other stable, the Fremont Police Department said in a tweet.

The department said it would not be releasing any details about the officers' conditions out of respect for their privacy.

"Initial reports are not good," The San Mateo County Deputy Sheriffs Association said in a statement.

Fremont is a community southwest of the San Francisco-Oakland area.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office was taking the lead in the investigation, the Fremont Police Department said.

In the early afternoon, a patrol officer attempted a traffic stop when the driver of the targeted vehicle backed into the patrol officer's car. Shots were fired, the officer was injured and the suspect ran away, the Fremont Police Department said.

Ten minutes later, police encountered the same suspect or suspects, resulting in several more shots being fired and a second officer being hurt, police said.

One suspect is Hispanic, about 6-feet tall and is wearing a San Francisco Giants shirt and shorts, police said. There may be a second suspect, according to police.
