What you missed at the Olympics so far, and what's ahead

What an opening weekend at the Rio Games! It started with an American gold: Shooter Ginny Thrasher surprised on Saturday, setting an Olympic record in the women's 10-meter air rifle. U.S. men's basketball thoroughly thumped China, 119-62, Saturday night. (And, oops: Some players might have accidentally gone to a brothel.) In injury news, French gymnast Samir Ait Said snapped his leg, then his stretcher was dropped. On Sunday, he vowed to return for Tokyo in 2020 despite the gruesome injury. Big events Sunday: Led by Simone Biles, U.S. women's gymnastics domainated after a day of qualifying. Swimmer Katie Ledecky won the gold in the 400 meter freestyle, setting a new world record, and Michael Phelps aims for the podium. And Brazil's men's soccer team continues its quest for Olympic gold. A-Rod announces retirement, will play final game Friday

Alex Rodriguez’s 22-year baseball career will come to an end Friday when he plays his final game for the New York Yankees, the team announced on Sunday. A-Rod will then assume a special adviser role with the club. Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays will be the prolific and polarizing player's final chance to add on to a resume that includes 696 home runs, fourth in baseball history.

Iran says it executed nuclear scientist in U.S. spy mystery

An Iranian scientist accused of providing information on his country's nuclear program to the United States has been executed for treason. Shahram Amiri was charged with spying for enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran, spokesman Gholamhosein Mohseni-Ejei said in his weekly news conference, the Iranian Student News Agency reported.

Emotional Brett Favre gives epic speech at Hall of Fame induction

Brett Favre entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the same mix of raw emotions that he played with in his 20-year career in the NFL. The former Green Bay Packers great on Saturday night became one of more than 300 members of the Hall. Favre gave an extemporaneous speech that lasted for 36 ½ minutes and was both funny and bittersweet.

'The People vs.O.J. Simpson' wins big 

FX miniseries The People vs.O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story won three top honors at the Television Critics Association awards Saturday, including program of the year. The TCA also honored FX's The Americans as outstanding drama for the second consecutive year; named ABC's Black-ish the year's outstanding comedy; and gave special awards to Lily Tomlin and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

ISIL claims to confiscate sensitive U.S. military gear

The Islamic State group is circulating photos of potentially sensitive American military equipment and identification cards purportedly confiscated by militants after recent battlefield engagements in Afghanistan. The photos show a variety of weapons, ammunition, communications gear and accessories. Perhaps the most chilling image is a closeup of someone holding two ID cards belonging to a U.S. soldier.

USA Gymnastics sex abuse investigation: New developments
