Emotional tributes mark 15th anniversary of 9/11 horror

Emotionally charged ceremonies at the World Trade Center site in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia and a rural field in western Pennsylvania marked the 15th anniversary Sunday of the most deadly terrorist attack in U.S. history. Bells tolled across much of the nation at 8:46 a.m. ET, the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center's North Tower. Thousands gathered in New York to listen as family members, after a moment of silence, began solemnly reading the names of the almost 3,000 victims. “I love and miss you dearly, and I wish I was able to spend more time with you,” said Maria Frances Pullis, who was 17 months old when her father, Edward, died in the South Tower. “But I know you’re up in heaven watching."

'Overheated' Clinton leaves 9/11 event early

Hillary Clinton unexpectedly left a 9/11 event in New York City because she didn't feel well, her campaign said Sunday. A video shows a wobbly-looking Clinton being helped into a van. New York temperatures on Sunday were in the low 80s, with humidity in the mid-40s. Clinton was suffering from pneumonia when she quickly departed the event, according to her doctor. The Democratic presidential nominee headed to her daughter Chelsea's apartment after leaving the event. She departed shortly after 11:45 a.m. ET, waving at people gathered on the sidewalks. Asked if she was feeling better, she said: "Yes ... thank you very much." The incident comes as the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made various claims about Clinton's health and may intensify calls for a fuller release of both candidates’ medical records.

Woman in iconic WWII Times Square kissing photo dies

The woman at the center of an iconic Times Square photograph taken at the end of World War II has died at 92, her son confirmed to media outlets Saturday. Greta Zimmer Friedman, then a 21-year-old dental assistant, was kissed by a sailor on Aug. 14, 1945, during a celebration in New York as news of the Japanese surrender reached home. The photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt was published in Life as “V-J Day in Times Square.”

NFL, players' union to investigate how Panthers handled Cam Newton in opener

The NFL and its players union are launching separate probes into the Carolina Panthers’ compliance with concussion protocol after star quarterback Cam Newton took a blow to the head late in Thursday night’s kickoff game against the Denver Broncos. Under a new policy jointly announced in July, the Panthers could face discipline from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell if it’s found the medical team didn’t follow the protocol. Each side will review its findings and recommend a disciplinary response. If they can’t agree, a third-party arbitrator will conduct a review and issue a report. The NFL noted in a statement Sunday morning that “initiation of this process does not mean that we have seen any evidence that the Protocol was applied improperly, but simply reflects our obligation to ensure the health and safety of our players.”

'Sully' becomes director Clint Eastwood's top box office debut

Never underestimate the box-office appeal of Tom Hanks saving the day. Clint Eastwood's heroic biopic Sully, with Hanks as the real-life airline pilot who pulled off the "Miracle on the Hudson," flew past the competition to finish No. 1 with $35.5 million in its opening weekend, according to studio estimates from comScore. Also starring Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney, the drama connected with critics (who collectively gave it an 83% "fresh" rating at review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes) and especially audiences (a grade of A on CinemaScore). Sully's weekend haul marks the fifth-best September opening of all time and Eastwood's top debut as a director.
