Explosion rocks NYC's Chelsea neighborhood

A powerful blast from an explosive device injured 29 people in New York City's popular Chelsea neighborhood on Saturday night. The explosion was from an apparent homemade device placed at West 23rd Street. A second device believed to be a pressure cooker was later found four blocks away on West 27th Street and was safely removed. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the explosion has no links so far to international terrorist groups.

Islamic State media claims 'soldier' stabbed 8 at Minnesota mall

An Islamic State news agency on Sunday said a man dressed as a security guard who talked about Allah as he stabbed at least eight people at a shopping mall was a "soldier" for the extremist group, the Associated Press reported. An off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction shot and killed the attacker. The ISIL news agency, Rasd, claimed late Sunday morning that the man was a “soldier of the Islamic State” who had heeded calls from the extremist group for attacks in countries that are part of a U.S.-led anti-ISIL coalition.

Bomb explodes near Marine Corps race in New Jersey

A pipe-bomb-style device exploded in a garbage can in Seaside Park on Saturday, and on Sunday Gov. Chris Christie called the blast an act of terrorism. The explosion happened at 9:35 a.m. Saturday at the corner of D Street and Ocean Avenue just minutes before the Seaside Park Semper Five Marine Corps charity race began. No one was injured, but the explosion triggered a multi-agency investigation.

Trump aides wrestle with 'birther' issue and alleged threats to Clinton

Donald Trump's aides tried Sunday to bury the issues of "birtherism" and an alleged incitement to violence against Hillary Clinton, but that won't be so easy to do less than two months before the election. While aides to Trump said he does believe that President Obama was born in the United States and was talking about gun rights rather than Clinton's safety, Democrats said the Republican nominee continues to make statements that seem to encourage racists and extremists.

Syria charges U.S.-led attack on its forces

The U.S. military said it halted a series of airstrikes Saturday in eastern Syria after Russia warned the United States that it mistakenly struck and killed Syrian military forces. The Russian Defense Ministry said 62 Syrians were killed in the strike, and the Syrian government said the coalition airstrike allowed the Islamic State to advance around Deir el-Zour province where the attack took place.

Nick Gordon found 'legally responsible' in Bobbi Kristina Brown's death

A Georgia judge Friday ruled that Bobbi Kristina Brown's ex-boyfriend is "legally responsible" for her death after the defendant failed to appear in court. The conservator of Brown's estate filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Nick Gordon in August 2015. The suit accused Gordon of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and transferring money from Brown’s account into his own without authorization. Brown, the daughter of Whitney Houston and singer Bobby Brown, died in August 2015 — several months after being found unresponsive in a tub at her Roswell, Ga., townhome.
