Bus crash clogs Lincoln Tunnel, injures 44

Two buses collided in the Lincoln Tunnel during Monday morning's rush hour, injuring 44 people, clogging a major artery between New York City and New Jersey and causing hour-long delays, according to news reports.

One New Jersey Transit bus rear-ended another one about 8:50 a.m., Lisa Torbic, a spokesman for the transit agency, told The Associated Press.

The door of one bus had to be cut open, according to Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the tunnel beneath the Hudson River.

At least 44 people were injured, with three serious injuries and 41 minor, according to the New York Fire Department.

Both buses were removed by 10:30 a.m., but traffic headed into the city suffered hour-long delays, according to NBC News. Live traffic cameras showed massive gridlock at the tunnel entrance, with cars crawling forward, according to NBC.

About 42 million vehicles travel through the tunnel annually, according to the port authority.
