Clear skies expected for most trick-or-treaters this year

Happy Halloween candy lovers! This year’s weather forecast should be a sweet treat. Most of the U.S. will see clear, calm skies Monday night, with cities in the South possibly seeing record-Halloween highs. Still need to buy your candy? The always-polarizing candy corn may actually be one of the most popular treats in your state this year. Trial underway in two high-profile police shootings

Jury selection begins Monday in the murder trial of former police officer Michael Slager, 34, who is charged in the April 2015 shooting death of Walter Scott, 50, in North Charleston, S.C.   And juror questioning gets underway in the trial of former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing, 26, who is charged in the shooting death of Sam DuBose, 43, during a July 2015 traffic stop. The two videotaped incidents of white police officers shooting black men helped fuel a firestorm of racial tension across the U.S.

Your local Arby's is now serving … venison?

With the start of hunting season getting underway, Arby’s is rolling out a new sandwich offering Monday: thick-cut venison steak from 100% deer meat. The new sandwich will be available for a limited time at 17 restaurants across the USA, starting in Nashville this week and expanding to areas in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Georgia. The company will be sourcing the meat from free-range, grass-fed farmed deer, and the sandwich will include crispy onions with a berry sauce on a toasted roll.

500 years later, Pope Francis ready to move past Reformation

Pope Francis is traveling to Sweden on Monday to join Lutheran leaders for a joint commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The anniversary of monk Martin Luther’s challenge to Catholic dogma may not seem like an event to celebrate from the Vatican’s perspective, but Francis’ participation is part of the Vatican’s wider efforts to mend ties with other Christians. Pope Francis will meet the Swedish prime minister and members of the royal family and will participate in an ecumenical prayer service at the Lutheran cathedral in Lund, southern Sweden.

2 billion children breathe toxic air worldwide, report says

A new report released Monday by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says about a third of the 2 billion children in the world who are breathing toxic air live in northern India and neighboring countries. They risk serious health effects including damage to their lungs, brains and other organs. Of that global total, 300 million kids are exposed to pollution levels more than six times higher than standards set by the World Health Organization, including 220 million in South Asia. For the Indian capital of New Delhi, the alarming numbers are hardly a surprise. The city's air pollution, among the world’s worst, spikes every winter because of the season’s weak winds and countless garbage fires set alight to help people stay warm.
