D.C. officer shoots self in foot during raccoon attack

A U.S. Park Police officer accidentally shot himself in the foot Thursday while trying to fend off a raccoon attack in Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C.

The incident happened around noon and the officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, local media reported. The raccoon was killed by another officer at the scene, the Washington Post reported.

Local resident David Stout told the Post he heard shots and when he came outside, he saw a police officer being taken away in a helicopter.

“I saw a dead raccoon, and heard a cop warn a guy walking his dog nearby, ‘Don’t go near, that raccoon’s rabid,' " Stout told the Post.
