South Carolina man suspected in deaths of up to 7 people
A man charged with kidnapping a 30-year-old South Carolina woman and keeping her chained in a storage shed was facing four counts of murder Sunday related to a quadruple homicide that took place 13 years ago. Todd Kohlhepp, 45, of Moore, S.C., now is suspected in the deaths of as many as seven people, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said. Kohlhepp is a real-estate agent and has been a registered sex offender since he was released from prison in 2001 after serving a 15-year kidnapping sentence for the rape and abduction of a 14-year-old neighbor in Tempe, Ariz., when he was 15.
U.S.-backed forces announce campaign to retake Islamic State's capital of Raqqa
A Kurdish-led Syrian coalition backed by the U.S. announced Sunday the start of a campaign to reclaim Raqqa, a Syrian city that became the Islamic State's de facto capital. The Syria Democratic Forces' announcement of the "campaign started by our troops" comes almost three weeks after U.S.-backed Iraqi forces launched a campaign to retake Mosul from ISIL. Both cities are key in the coalition's strategy to weaken the extremist group's grip in the region.
Manny Pacquiao tops Jessie Vargas for welterweight title
Manny Pacquiao produced a crowd-pleasing but imperfect display to win the WBO welterweight title on Saturday night, taking the belt from Jessie Vargas thanks to a unanimous points decision at the Thomas and Mack Center. Pacquiao won 114-113 on one judge’s scorecard, and by a runaway margin of 118-109 on the other two.
Two N.J. officials guilty on all counts in Bridgegate lane closure scandal
Two former associates to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were convicted Friday of engineering a political payback scheme using the George Washington Bridge and creating massive, hours-long traffic jams in Fort Lee, N.J., that stranded motorists and clogged local streets for five mornings in September 2013. The scandal helped cut short the governor's presidential ambitions and exposed an administration's bullying and dirty tricks.
Jury rules against Rolling Stone magazine, reporter in rape story libel case
A jury in Charlottesville, Va., found Friday that Rolling Stone magazine and its reporter defamed a school administrator over a now-debunked article about a purported gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity. After some 20 hours of deliberation, the 10-person jury found reporter Sabrina Rubin Erdely responsible for defamation with malice on six claims by Nicole Eramo, and Rolling Stone magazine and Wenner Media responsible for defaming her on three claims.
