Biggest news you missed this weekend

Trump protests erupt across the nation

Street demonstrations that started as a release of anger, frustration and disbelief after Democrat Hillary Clinton conceded to Republican Donald Trump have mushroomed into a rolling movement that has engulfed the country. Protesters organized in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and other cities for the fourth night Saturday. The gatherings were largely peaceful, though a protest in Indianapolis turned violent and one in Portland devolved into a riot. Meanwhile, Trump has started to temper his positions on Obamacare and immigration and on Sunday tapped Reince Priebus — the Republican Party chairman who helped engineer his stunning presidential victory last week — as his White House chief of staff.

Earthquake jolts New Zealand

A powerful earthquake rocked New Zealand early Monday local time, killing at least two people, damaging buildings and triggering a tsunami that forced thousands to flee coastal areas. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-7.8 quake was centered less than 60 miles northeast of Christchurch, scene of a devastating 2011 quake that killed almost 200 people. New Zealand, an island nation of less than 5 million people in the southwestern Pacific, is about 1,200 miles east of Australia and 4,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a Pacific-wide impact was not expected and that Hawaii was not threatened.

Paris marks first anniversary of terror attacks with somber moment of silence

Parisians commemorated Sunday's one-year anniversary of the deadly attacks on the City of Light with silence in solemn ceremonies, remembering a day many say brutally left its mark. French President François Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo unveiled commemorative plaques with the names of all 130 victims at each site targeted a year ago by Kalashnikov-wielding assailants: the cafes and bistros of the 10th and 11th districts, the Stade de France stadium in the northern outskirts of the city, plus the Bataclan concert hall in central Paris.

'SNL': Kate McKinnon's Clinton delivers tearjerker 'Hallelujah' performance

Viewers may have been expecting Saturday Night Live to kick off on a satirical note, but Kate McKinnon opened the night singing a different tune. In the long-running variety show's first episode since Trump’s historic upset, McKinnon appeared at the piano in full Hillary Clinton regalia. With tears pricking the corner of her eyes, the SNL favorite launched into a haunting rendition of the late Leonard Cohen’s slow-burner, Hallelujah. The cold open served both as a moment of solidarity with those rocked by the election’s outcome and as tribute to the virtuosic songwriter, who died last week.

Conor McGregor makes history, KOs Eddie Alvarez for UFC lightweight title

Conor McGregor backed up his big talk once again to become the first two-weight world champion in Ultimate Fighting Championship history with a knockout victory against Eddie Alvarez. As UFC 205 drifted well past midnight Eastern time at Madison Square Garden, McGregor unleashed an unanswered flurry of four fierce punches to send Alvarez tumbling to the canvas, before referee John McCarthy stopped the fight at 3:04 of round two. The stoppage gave McGregor custody of the lightweight title previously held by Alvarez, to go along with his featherweight belt.
