How the Florida airport shooting unfolded

Authorities believe Esteban Santiago, the suspect in the rampage, flew to Florida early Friday before carrying out an attack that left five people dead and six injured in Fort Lauderdale.

THURSDAY, JAN. 5

Esteban  Santiago left Anchorage, Alaska on a Delta Airlines flight, transiting through Minneapolis, before arriving in Fort Lauderdale early Friday afternoon.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON, JAN. 6

The plane is directed to Terminal 2 of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

AFTER TOUCHDOWN

Passengers, including Santiago, exit the plane of the terminal’s second floor and are directed to the first floor to retrieve checked luggage and to exit the airport.

ACCESSING THE WEAPON

Santiago retrieves his bag at the baggage claim area and takes it into one of two nearby restrooms, where he proceeds to remove and load a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

1:00 P.M. ET

Exiting the restroom, Santiago indiscriminately begins firing his weapon at people in the baggage claim area, reloading his weapon multiple times.

AND THEN, SILENCE

Running out of ammunition, Santiago drops his weapon and lays down spread-eagle until authorities arrive to arrest him. But not before killing 5 people and wounding at least 6.
