Victim in Las Vegas Strip shooting was tourist from Montana

Authorities in Nevada said a 57-year-old Montana man was the lone fatality in a Saturday shooting on a Las Vegas Strip tour bus.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the victim as Gary Breitling, 57, of Sidney, Mont. He died at a hospital shortly after gunfire was reported Saturday, The Associated Press reported. Breitling was visiting Las Vegas with his wife, family members said.

Another victim suffered injuries and was hospitalized but was expected to live.

Police on Sunday identified the alleged shooter as Rolando Cardenas, 56, of Las Vegas. He surrendered peacefully after a standoff lasting more than four hours inside the bus. Cardenas was arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, burglary and opening fire on the bus, AP reported.

The double-decker bus had stopped on the Strip near the Cosmopolitan hotel-casino and passengers were leaving when Cardenas stood up and fired several rounds from a handgun, police said. Both victims were seated in the back with Cardenas.

It was not immediately known how many people were on the bus at the time of the shooting, but it appeared that some riders were able to flee. Police have asked passengers who witnessed the shooting to call (702) 828-7777.

Because authorities did not know if more victims were inside, crisis negotiators, robots and armored vehicles surrounded the bus. Officers swept into casinos to warn tourists to hunker down until further notice, leaving the normally bustling pedestrian areas and a road notorious for taxi-to-taxi traffic completely empty, AP reported.

Visitors also hid inside some of the other prominent properties nearby, including the Bellagio, Paris, Planet Hollywood and Bally’s.

Supporters of Breitling started a GoFundMe page for the family, saying the second person injured in the attack was a family member.
