Noah Nathan was walking his two Goldendoodles (cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle) Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Va., when shots rang out, he told NBC News.

At first, he thought he was hearing fireworks, but then he realized he was hearing gunshots and he dropped to the ground and held his dogs, Coco and Jazz, he said in an NBC interview.

Nathan said he saw Congress members trying to hop the fence and get away as police and alleged shooter James Hodgkinson exchanged gunfire.

The nearly six-minute video includes the first shots and views of law enforcement and someone in a baseball uniform running.
