Slain New York police officer is laid to rest

A New York Police Department officer who was fatally shot and killed in the final moments of her shift will be laid to rest early Tuesday. Miosotis Familia, 48, was shot in the head by Alexander Bonds, 34, an ex-con who had a checkered rap sheet. Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store shows Bonds walking to the police cruiser shortly after midnight on Wednesday last week, where he fired one shot at the mother-of-three and 12-year police force veteran. Familia's patrol partner, who was also in the car at the time, frantically called in the shooting. Bonds was fatally shot in a confrontation with police minutes later. The shooting death came the same week the NYPD was celebrating the addition of more than 500 candidates to its police academy.
