5 things you need to know Tuesday

Trump addresses U.N. General Assembly

After making his first statement as president at the United Nations on Monday, President Trump heads back to the U.N. on Tuesday for his first address to the 193-members of the world body's general assembly. With the escalating tensions with North Koreaanother terrorist attack in London plus his administration's efforts to bringing peace to the Middle East, Trump will have plenty of topics to choose from for his speech. And of course, it remains to be seen what Trump has to say about the U.N. itself. During Monday's special forum, Trump riffed off his 2016 presidential campaign slogan: "I think the main message is ‘Make the United Nations Great' – not 'Again'," he said.

Jose bears down on East Coast

While Hurricane Maria roared across part of the Caribbean before weakening slightly to a still-dangerous Category 4 storm, the U.S. East Coast will endure a variety of dangerous impacts from Hurricane Jose on Tuesday. Jose will bring rough seas, high surf, coastal erosion and rip currents from the Mid-Atlantic to New England Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center warned. Tropical storm warnings are in effect along the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. "Coastlines from North Carolina to southern New England are in for a long period of rough surf and an increasing risk of beach erosion," Weather Underground meteorologist Bob Henson said. "If Jose were to make landfall, it could end up producing significant surge even as a post-tropical storm." Jose will produce heavy rain as it passes near southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday and Wednesday, the hurricane center said. Total accumulations of 3 to 5 inches of rain are expected.

Have an iPhone? iOS 11 is here

Want new iPhone features but don't want to shell out for the new iPhone 8 or iPhone X? Today is your day. Apple on Tuesday is releasing iOS 11, the latest version of its mobile operating system that powers iPhones and iPads. While the free update won't add new iPhone features such as wireless charging (for that you'd need a new phone), it will add a smarter Siri, improved "Control Center" for quickly tweaking settings and support for augmented reality apps. The new software will run on a variety of the latest iPhones and iPads — though if you have an iPhone 5 or older, you'll be out of luck.

Audit shows if Minneapolis police officers are using their body cameras

Officials are eager to review the findings of an internal audit Tuesday that will determine if Minneapolis police officers are using their body cameras as they should. The police department changed its body camera policy following the July shooting death of an Australian woman, Justine Ruszczyk Damond, who was killed after reporting a possible sexual assault behind her home. Police chief Medaria Arradondo claims that his officers are using the cameras more than they did before, while one city official who reviewed the audit claims that some officers "never have it on."

Avast me hearties! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day

Shiver me timbers, International Talk Like a Pirate Day be upon us once again, me mateys. The silly holiday has become as popular as a chest full of Spanish doubloons since it was first conceived by two friends 22 years ago. Now, it feels like every day, another National (fill-in-the-blank) Day is being pushed on us by marketers, advocacy groups, tweeters and complicit journalists. But, in an era when we are bombarded with bad news, finding more to celebrate isn't such a bad thing.
