Trump expected to lobby Senate GOP on tax reform
President Trump is expected to talk with Senate Republicans during a lunch meeting Tuesday as GOP leaders huddle to pass a sweeping budget agreement that would allow them to fast-track a tax-cut package. Last week, the Senate passed its version of a GOP 2018 budget widely seen as a vital blueprint that would block Democrats from filibustering a tax bill. But even as Republicans coalesce around that broad strategy, they remain in disagreement over major elements of the tax cut proposal — including how to pay for the tax cuts and how much the package should add to the deficit.
This World Series could be historic — and hot
The 2017 World Series gets underway between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros on Tuesday night (8 p.m. ET), with Game 1 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. It's the Dodgers' first trip to the World Series since 1988 and the Astros' first since 2005. Houston joined the league in 1962 and has never won the World Series. The first game is a battle of Cy Young winners, with Clayton Kershaw (18-2, 2.31 ERA) going for the Dodgers and Dallas Keuchel (14-5, 2.90 ERA) taking the mound for the Astros. It's expected to be the hottest World Series game ever played, with temperatures forecasted for the upper-90s at 5 p.m. local time in Los Angeles.
Senate to take up disaster aid vote on $36.5 billion package
The Senate is expected to vote Tuesday on a $36.5 billion aid bill for states and U.S. territories devastated by this year's hurricanes and wildfires. Some Democrat and Republican lawmakers have raised concerns that the package would “bail out”' the struggling federal flood insurance program and doesn’t include enough money to help states recover from devastating hurricanes. The deal would include $18.7 billion for FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund, $16 billion directed to the National Flood Insurance Program and $576.5 million to assist in recovery efforts from wildfires in the West Coast. Trial to begin in killing of gender-fluid teen
One of two men accused of killing a gender-fluid Iowa teenager goes on trial Tuesday in a case that is also the subject of a federal hate crime investigation. Jorge “Lumni” Sanders-Galvez, is charged with first-degree murder in the 2016 death of 16-year-old Kedarie Johnson, a well-liked youth whose body was found riddled with bullets and dumped in an alley. The murder shocked the small town of Burlington, Iowa, and prompted Attorney General Jeff Sessions to assign a prominent federal civil-rights attorney to the state's defense team.
Snoop Dogg's 'Joker' is even wilder on TBS game-show revival
Snoop Dogg has been a lot of things in his day, including rapper, MC, awards-show host and roast participant. Tuesday night he adds quizmaster to his resume with Snoop Dogg Presents The Joker’s Wild (TBS, 10 p.m. ET/PT). The hip-hop star is hosting a cool, late-night revival of the early ‘70s game show, which he says he used to watch with his grandmother. The revival retains the original format, with contestants pulling levers to reveal quiz-category choices on a big-screen slot machine. But with categories such as Go Yeezy on Me, ‘Fro Back Thursday, and Matzo Ball Snoop, viewers will quickly see this is not their father's (or grandmother's) game show.
