Puerto Rico’s scandal-hit governor steps down from office

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló’s resignation comes into effect on Friday, more than a week after the embattled politician announced he was stepping down from office. Rossello’s administration was hit by scandal after his vulgar, mean-spirited texting conversations were leaked. Massive protests followed, where Puerto Ricans on the island and across the United States called for the governor to step down. Rosselló initially named Justice Secretary Wanda Vázquez as his successor, but she turned down the job. Now, it appears Rosselló’s former rival Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia will take over as governor.

Funeral to be held for twin infants who perished in dad's hot car

Funeral services will be held in Yonkers, New York, on Friday for infant twins who died after they were left in a hot car for hours while their father went to work. Juan Rodriguez, 39, was charged with two counts each of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide after New York City police said they discovered Phoenix and Luna Rodriguez in the back seat of his Honda around 4 p.m. Friday in the Bronx. Rodriguez told police he had forgotten to drop the 1-year-old infants at daycare, according to a criminal complaint. On Thursday, a lawyer for Rodriguez said the deaths were a "horrible accident" asked the Bronx district attorney to dismiss the charges. Here's what you need to know to prevent hot car deaths.

'Fast and the Furious' spinoff 'Hobbs and Shaw' hits theaters

There have been eight "Fast and Furious" movies, with a ninth to come in 2020. But the franchise's first spinoff, "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" zooms into theaters nationwide Friday. The new adventure in the "Furious" universe features frenemies from past films American lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and British mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) teaming up to take on genetically enhanced bad guy Brixton Lore (Idris Elba). . In his ★ ★ ½ (out of four) review,  Paste BN's Brian Truitt calls "Hobbs & Shaw" "a Frankenstein's monster of action-hero testosterone — though the highlight is a woman — that gets lost trying to be its own thing." And in his definitive rankings of all the "Fast and Furious" movies, Truitt puts "Hobbs & Shaw" in the middle of the pack

Investigation resumes after deadly gas explosion in Kentucky

Authorities will resume their investigation Friday after a natural gas pipeline exploded in Central Kentucky, killing at least one person. The explosion and fire destroyed five homes and damaged four others in the Indian Camp mobile home park and melted tar on nearby U.S. 127, emergency officials said. Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Don Gilliam said the flames reached about 300 feet in the air and could be seen throughout Lincoln County. Emergency managers said the rupture involved the Texas Eastern Transmission pipeline, which is owned and operated by Enbridge. The pipeline stretches more than 9,000 miles, from the Mexican border in Texas to New York City.  

Duchess of Sussex can add another title to her list of accolades

The September issue of British Vogue, which highlights fearless female changemakers, hits newsstands Friday with a new guest-editor: Duchess Meghan. The edition's theme, "Forces for Change," features 15 famous women, including actresses and activists Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, Jameela Jamil, Yara Shahidi, Laverne Cox and Gemma Chan. The issue for fashion magazines is a major deal: It's a yearly doctrine of all the major fashion trends to look out for in the fall and winter, and covers usually feature high-profile and otherwise tough-to-book celebrities and fashion icons. The duchess, who worked on the issue while pregnant, said that she's excited to utilize one of the world's biggest fashion outlets to highlight "the values, causes and people making impact in the world today."
