Tropical Storm Elsa pounds the East Coast, uncertainty in Haiti, 'Black Widow': 5 things to know Friday

Tropical Storm Elsa slams East Coast, spurs tornado warnings

Severe weather from Tropical Storm Elsa spurred tornado warnings in Delaware and New Jersey early Friday as the system moved over the mid-Atlantic states and into the northeastern United States. The unrelenting storm has claimed one life in Florida, injured several people in Georgia and flooded parts of New York City. A tropical storm warning Friday morning stretched along parts of the East Coast from New Jersey to Massachusetts. The tropical storm was expected to cross over the Northeast by the afternoon and move over Atlantic Canada by the night and Saturday. No significant change in strength was expected during the day, and Elsa is forecast to become a post-tropical cyclone by Friday night.

Haitians face uncertainty after president’s assassination

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph proclaimed a "state of siege” in Haiti, after President Jovenel Moïse was shot to death and his wife wounded during a raid at his home on Wednesday. Joseph made the declaration, which is similar to martial law, as he assumed control of the government despite questions to his claim to power. Authorities said they’ve taken two Haitian Americans into custody in connection with the assassination. Police sources in the country said 28 mercenaries were involved, according to former Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. Léon Charles, head of Haiti's National Police, said 15 of the detainees were from Colombia and that eight suspects were still on the run. Haiti had grown increasingly unstable under Moïse, who had been ruling by decree for more than a year and faced violent protests as critics accused him of trying to amass more power while the opposition demanded he step down.

Dodgers star remains on leave amid assault investigation

Major League Baseball extended Trevor Bauer’s administrative leave for one more week effective Friday as an investigation continues into a woman’s allegation that he sexually assaulted her. The league initially placed the 30-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher on leave for seven days on July 2. The accuser, a San Diego woman, said Bauer punched multiple parts of her body and choked her with her hair to the point that she lost consciousness during the alleged attack. Bauer, through his co-agent Jon Fetterolf, has claimed that the two sexual encounters between him and the woman were consensual.
