Louisiana's Clay Higgins on front line of House assassination probe with Speaker Mike Johnson

Louisiana Republican U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins will be among those on the front lines of congressional investigations into the assassination attempt of former Republican President Donald Trump Saturday that will also be directed by House Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport.

Widespread concerns are being expressed about how the shooter was able to gain elevated rooftop access fewer than 200 yards from Trump while he was speaking at the outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Higgins is a member of the House Oversight Committee whose chairman Republican Congressman James Comer has scheduled a public hearing on July 22 in which U.S. Secretary Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has been requested to testify.

“The American people demand answers about yesterday’s assassination attempt on President Trump,” said Higgins, who represents Acadiana's 3rd Congressional District. “The House Oversight Committee is in communication with the U.S. Secret Service. We will thoroughly investigate the events that transpired at President Trump’s rally. America deserves the full truth.”

That coincides with Johnson's assurance there will be a "full investigation" by Congress and various committees in the House.

“Congress will do a full investigation of the tragedy to determine where there were lapses in security and anything else that the American people need to know and deserve to know,” Johnson said Sunday on the "Today" show.

Johnson said he has already asked “pointed questions” of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Saturday night.
