Daily Briefing: Midwestern nice
A rare tone of bipartisan agreement was on display during last night's vice presidential debate. The majority of the missiles launched by Iran at Israel were intercepted by air defenses. President Joe Biden will visit areas affected by Hurricane Helene on Wednesday.

The winner of the VP debate is...compromise?
Likely the final debate in a close presidential race, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, faced off against Ohio Sen. JD Vance − former President Donald Trump's running mate − during the CBS News Vice Presidential Debate Tuesday.
Both candidates often diverged when it came to the minutia of hot-button policies. But in an era marked by bitter partisan feuds and discord, the frequent mention of compromise between the men was a win for Washington.
- The word “agree” was spoken 12 times during the debate. From economics to abortion, the candidates noted several areas where rare bipartisan collaboration could be possible.
- The Midwest was a common topic of discussion. Vance often discussed the hardships he faced growing up in Middletown, Ohio, and Walz spoke bout his small-town upbringing in Nebraska.
- How did Kamala Harris and Donald Trump fare in it? Vance delivered a more coherent version of Trump's message than the former president himself managed to do at the presidential debate last month. Walz was triumphant after Vance sidestepped questions about Trump's refusal to accept the results of the last election, leading to the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol.

There were no immediate reports of Israeli casualties from the barrage, which targeted Tel Aviv and other central parts of Israel. The attack comes as the Middle East appears to be teetering on the brink of a multi-state war and followed an Israeli ground operation into Lebanon on Tuesday, where Iran-backed Hezbollah is based.
