A United States representative from South Carolina introduced a resolution on Monday that would prevent transgender people from using the bathrooms at the Capitol that don't match their biological sex.

The move to ban transgenders from Capitol bathrooms comes just weeks after the first openly transgender person, Sarah McBride, 34, won Delaware's at-large seat in Congress. She is a Democrat and the highest-ranking transgender elected official in United States history.

Who is Nancy Mace?

Nancy Mace, 46, is a Republican that made a few firsts of her own. She was the first woman to graduate from the Citadel’s Corps of Cadets in 1999 and became the first Republican woman elected to Congress from South Carolina.

According to Mace’s resolution, “allowing biological males into single-sex facilities, such as restrooms, locker rooms and changing rooms designed for women, jeopardizes the safety and dignity of Members, officers and employees of the House who are female.”

On Monday night, Mace posted on her social media site X, "Biological men do not belong in private women’s spaces. Period. Full stop. End of story."

Later Monday night, McBride responded with her own post on X, "Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness."

In a follow up post, McBride said "Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more affordable and accessible and that’s what I’m focused on."

In an interview with CNN, Mace said “This is a biological man trying to force himself into women’s spaces, and I’m not going to tolerate it.” She continued, “I’m the first woman to graduate from the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. If some guy in a skirt came by and said, ‘No, that’s my achievement.’ I’m going to be there and standing in the way and saying, ‘Hell no.’ I’m not going to allow men to erase women or women’s rights.”
