Police: Child shot by sibling in Cleveland County

A 1-year-old child was injured at a home in the Lawndale area Tuesday in what law enforcement said was an accidental shooting.

According to a news release from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to an address on Buck Horn Lane in the Lawndale area just after 6:30 p.m. in reference to a report of a 1-year-old child who had accidentally been shot.

"Upon arrival of deputies, witnesses stated that the 1-year-old was shot accidentally by a 3-year-old sibling with a firearm that was being kept in the house," the release said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the child is being treated at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte and is expected to make a full recovery.

The release said the investigation is ongoing, but Sheriff Alan Norman expressed the importance of proper firearm storage and safety.

Norman said charges could be forthcoming.
