The funeral for former President Jimmy Carter took place Thursday morning in Washington, D.C.

Following the service, his remains were taken to Carter's hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service and interment Thursday night.

President Joe Biden declared Thursday a National Day of Mourning after Carter's death on Dec. 29 at age 100. All federal government offices are closed.

Who attended Jimmy Carter's funeral?

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and all living former presidents attended the funeral, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama.

Both President-elect Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence also attended, marking the first time the pair were in the same room in four years.

Their last public appearance together came before the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when Pence, as vice president, refused to support efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The backlash from Trump and his supporters resulted in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, where rioters chanted "Hang Mike Pence" as he and other officials sought safety.

The spouses of the living presidents, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Melania Trump, and some children of former presidents also attended the funeral. Michelle Obama was not in attendance.

England's Prince Edward, brother of King Charles III, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended.

Steve Ford, the son of former President Gerald Ford, delivered a eulogy for the 39th president written by his father, who died almost two decades prior. Gerald Ford had agreed to give a eulogy for his friend Carter, but died nearly 18 years before him, highlighting Carter's significant longevity. Carter delivered the eulogy at Ford's funeral in 2007.

Ted Mondale, the son of Carter's running mate, former Vice President Walter Mondale, also delivered a eulogy written by the late vice president. Walter Mondale died in 2021.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood attended the funeral and performed "Imagine" by John Lennon. The song was Carter's favorite.
