Daily Briefing: Pope Francis dies at 88
Good morning!🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm Nicole Fallert. Everyone loves anti-book club book clubs.
Here's a look at Monday's news:
- The Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis.
- After years of delays, the final, very real deadline to have a Real ID while flying in the U.S. is right around the corner.
- Team USA defeated rival Canada in the women's world hockey championships.
Remembering Pope Francis, a leader known for change
Pope Francis' death comes just one day after the frail but determined pontiff greeted thousands after Easter Mass in his open-air popemobile.
Francis was the 266th pope. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Francis rose through the ranks as a Jesuit priest in his home country of Argentina. Over the course of his papacy, some thought he was too radical. Others thought he was a fresh start to make faith again relevant.
- He just made an Easter Sunday appearance. The pope sat in a raised chair in his vehicle, blessing a throng from a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square in Rome.
- He also held a brief meeting on Sunday with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. The pontiff has criticized the Trump administration’s mass deportation of migrants and disputed Vance’s interpretation of theology.
- "Who am I to judge?" Pope Francis will be remembered for spearheading outreach to women, immigrants and refugees, LGBTQ people, and people from other faiths. He sometimes took progressive or controversial stances on same-sex couples and climate change.Â
Hegseth shared Yemen attack plans in family chat
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared details of a March attack on Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis in a message group that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday. The revelations of a second Signal chat raise more questions about Hegseth's use of an unclassified messaging system to share highly sensitive security details and come at a particularly delicate moment for him, with senior officials ousted from the Pentagon last week as part of an internal leak investigation. Democratic lawmakers said Hegseth could no longer stay in his job.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia case could soon be back at Supreme Court
The Supreme Court told Trump administration officials to facilitate the return of Maryland father Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador. But the case could return to the high court after the Trump administration said it doesn't need to even request the illegally deported man's release from El Salvador — because of how the court worded its decision. To some, such statements show the administration is refusing to obey the nation's highest court.
Don't wait to get your Real ID
Some states are in a scramble to make sure everyone has a compliant Real ID before a May 7 deadline. Real ID, a standard for travel identification first passed by Congress in 2005, will be a requirement to fly domestically starting in just over two weeks. In many states, the Real ID rollout has been optional, with some choosing a standard license, which might require fewer documents or a lower fee. They will now need to upgrade if they plan to travel by air domestically. As the deadline nears, some DMVs have added special Real ID-only appointments to satisfy demand while at others, appointments have become impossible to get.

Will teams trade up in the NFL draft?
As the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft progresses, there are bound to be a handful of teams that try to move up or down the draft board. That will be particularly true late in the first round, when some of the league's quarterback-needy teams will consider moving up to grab prospects like Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart and potentially even Jalen Milroe or Tyler Shough. But what could their trades look like, and who would each team consider moving up to get? Here are five potential trades that could happen in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
